ST. CROIX CELTIC

www.stcroixceltic.com

St. Croix Celtic is based in the St. Croix Valley in Minnesota. The team is part of the highly-regarded St. Croix Soccer Club (www.stcroixsoccer.org) and participates in the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association. The team has improved every year it has played together, and with a current #3 rating among Minnesota's U16 teams, is among the elite teams in its age group in Minnesota. Celtic trains hard, plays hard and plays fair. Over the past three years, the team's C1 league record is an impressive 25-1-6. Celtic has been the premier league alternate for the past two years, meaning if any current premier team opts out of that league, Celtic will move up. Coach Jake Smothers leads the boys again in 2010 as they broaden their exposure and move on to more intense competition as a U17 Select/ Tournament-Only team.

2009 season recap: 2009 was a fantastic year for Celtic, as they compiled their best-ever record playing their most difficult schedule. The team finished with 17 wins, 4 losses and 6 ties. They scored 69 goals (2.6 per game) and allowed 17 (0.6 per game), and earned 14 shutouts (52% of all games). Two of the team's four losses were by shootout. In Spring, the team competed in the Midwest Regional League for the first time, and compiled a 3-2-2 record, good for third place. Celtic beat highly-ranked teams from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois, and gave the league winners their only loss. From there, Celtic won their Minnesota State Cup bracket, going 3-0 and allowing one goal, before losing in the State Cup semi-finals in a shoot-out. Celtic went 9-0-1 in the Minnesota Classic 1 league, earning their third straight Classic 1 league championship and an automatic entry to the state tournament. The boys went undefeated in bracket play at the USA Cup, before losing in a semi-final shootout to the eventual champions. The team shut out both of its state tournament opponents, but did not score and thus did not advance to the championship game.

2008 season recap: Celtic won its first indoor futsal session, and took 3rd in the second session. The team went 1-1-1 in the Cedar Rapids Chill Out in April. In the Minnesota State Cup, Celtic lost to eventual champions Edina 1-0 on a late direct kick. In league play, Celtic compiled an 8-1-1 overall league record. Between league play and the State Tournament, Celtic played in the USA Cup in July. There, they went 3-0 in their bracket, and won their first playoff match before losing to the champions from Iceland. Celtic won all three of their state tournament pool, before losing in the state championship. Celtic needed a win in their final match to earn premier status for 2009. The team's overall record in 2008 was 17-5-2.

2007 season recap: Undefeated in league play at U14 Classic 1 with a 8-0-4 record. Overall record of 15-6-6, with 45 goals for and 19 against.
