FUTSAL EAST is an indoor futsal league designed to help soccer players develop their foot skills and speed of play in a fun league environment. Games take place at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center Soccer Dome, 1675 Market Drive, Stillwater, MN 55082 (click the address for a mapquest map).
Futsal’s origins can be traced to South America in 1930, when a youth soccer coach devised a 5 v. 5 version of soccer for competition in YMCA gymnasiums. Once established, futsal gained rapid popularity throughout South America, particularly in Brazil. The skills developed in this game are visible in the world-famous style the Brazilians display outdoors on the full-sized field. Pele, Zico, Socrates, Bebeto, Ronaldinho and other Brazilian superstars developed their skill playing futsal (you may have seen Ronaldinho as a child playing futsal in Nike TV ads). While Brazil continues to be the futsal hub of the world, the game is now played all over the world, from Europe to North and Central America and the Caribbean, South America, Africa, and Asia.
The game is played on a small field with a ball that is smaller and heavier than a typical soccer ball. The heavier ball tends to stay on the ground, which helps players develop their footwork, and the smaller field encourages fast play. In addition, futsal is a no-contact sport.
This year, all teams will play a 5 v. 5 format on a 75’ x 120’ field, with permanent goals with goalkeepers. There is no limit to the number of players you can have on your team, though it is suggested that teams roster enough players to ensure they have twice the number of field players attending each game.
